Credit-by-exam: is your child eligible?

What to check before assuming your child can, or can't, skip a class.

Many school districts allow students to earn credit for a course by passing an exam instead of sitting through the class — but policies vary widely by state, district, and even by subject. This guide is here to help you ask the right questions, not to promise a specific outcome before you've checked with your school.

Questions to ask your school counselor

  • Does our district offer credit-by-exam, and for which subjects?
  • Is there a specific test required — a district-created exam, CLEP, an AP exam, or something else?
  • Is there a minimum grade level or prerequisite before a student can attempt it?
  • Is there a limit on how many times a student can attempt the exam?
  • Does passing show as credit only, or does it also count toward GPA or class rank?
  • Is there a registration deadline each year?
  • Does earning credit this way affect eligibility for the next course level up?

Signs your child might be a good candidate

  • They're consistently finishing current coursework early and correctly, not just quickly.
  • They've expressed genuine boredom or frustration with the pace, not the difficulty.
  • Diagnostic or practice tests for the subject already show mastery.
  • A teacher has independently mentioned they seem ahead of the material.

Credit-by-exam policies differ a lot from district to district. The fastest way to get a real answer is a specific email to the counselor naming the subject and asking directly whether an exam-based credit option exists this year.
